CSS and a general rule of thumb
It sounds like Google has just recently started to index CSS files on people’s sites. For anyone who is unfamiliar with css, it simply changes the look and feel of your site without changing the html or content. Sadly, there are people who load keyword-rich content into their css files and make it invisible to users. Some are black-hat search marketers and some have simply been told that they can get their site to show up in the search engines that way, and it may work…..temporarily. Now that Google is indexing css files (and I’m sure the other major search engines will follow suit) there are going to be a lot of sites who’s rankings are penalized. So, here’s the general rule for all of you out there who aren’t purposely attempting to be black hat marketers: If you are doing something to your site that you feel may be the least bit deceptive to the search engines, don’t. Most likely, you’ll be penalized for it and coming back from search engine penalizations can be quite a process.
